Split Rings Strings…. A new look to Christmas Decor

Kiran Thakur, a member of our Indian Happy Tatters Group, invited fellow tatters to contribute towards a Fund Raiser. Madhur...our group's most senior and passionate tatter, inspired everyone to tat Christmas Decor items for this Noble Cause. The proceeds from the sale of these tatted articles would be donated to the Welfare of the Animals in Goa, India. 

‘Snowflakes tatting’ theme captured the mind of every tatter in the group... a good opportunity to display tatting of snowflakes, crosses and medallions. Various tatting techniques were shared and learnt in the group.  Overflowing enthusiasm of each member is an inspiration to tat more and create new patterns. 

Sharing my snowflakes creations tatted with Anchor 20 ……..

My first attempt was using .Dot Picot Strings

A new concept of ornamental Starrings Bookmark

using naked silver rings and beaded Dot Picot Strings.  

The star motifs and tassels are tatted with Dot Picot Strings using Dot

Picots and seed beads alternatively. Dot Picot Strings are woven onto

the center ring of each motif with Hidden Picot method. These star

motifs are joined together with silver rings of 10mm by normal lock join.

Nothing Trembles!!

I kept watching Ninetta’s new Treble Stitches technique and patterns for a long time. I gone through Muskaan’s detailed study of the technique, but still I did not dare to try out Treble Tatting. One fine day I picked up a filled shuttle, watched Treble Tatting video and came out with a lace … it was totally unplanned….

Yes, I tatted Dot Picot String in between the rings, replacing the bare thread and the result was fusion of two techniques. What a wonderful tatting technique by Ninetta!!!! I managed to learn it easily from her video without trembling and would love to tat other treble variations.

Tip: Dot Picot String can be replaced by 

        1.Tiny beads or 

        2. Keeping bare thread or

        3. Tatting lock chain stitches by adding ball thread 

Muskaan accepted to test tat my fusion motif. She has already mastered the treble technique and tried out many variations which are posted in her blog.

Ninetta too suggested few important changes in the written pattern like the first treble stitch starts with vsp etc….

I thank Muskaan for being so helpful in test tatting and pattern corrections. I thank Ninetta for sharing her wonderful Treble Tatting technique through videos and her blog. Also for helping me finalize the Sparkle Fusion.

Hi all

Back again and sharing my new lanyard patterns with you. Earlier I posted patterns with split rings and beads in My Lanyards. When it was discovered that the Dot Picots can be tatted on bare thread, I tatted  laces on a single shuttle. The same method of stringing Dot Picots is used for spectacle strings, all tatted in Anchor thread no.20. You can zoom in on my working pics for a closer view.

Lanyard No 1

A Combination of Split Rings, Dot Picot String and crystal bead is used in this lanyard. The cocktail colour crystal goes well with lighter shade of the thread. As seen in close up pic below, the crystal bead is strung and dot picot strings are tatted individually on each shuttle in between two split rings alternatively.

Lanyard 2

A dark purple thread with white crystal used in this lanyard. The crystal strung in middle of the Dot Picot Strings gives a different design pattern.

Lanyard No 3

Here the variation is in beads too.  Two tiny maroon beads on both sides of each golden bugle bead are arranged to avoid the latter from cutting through the thread. Small split rings of 2/2 ds tatted on either side of beads and Dot Picot strings.

Lanyard No 4

Yellow transparent big beads contrasting with thread color blue. Dot Picot Strings are followed by the bead and split ring.

Dot picots in tatting are very convenient to use anywhere and in any application. Why not try them now?

Art of Overlaying......

Hi Friends

Recently found way of overlaying another color of thread while working on normal rings.

The yellow rings are encircled with overlaid clusters made of tiny Dot Picots and Dot Picot Strings. You can see the innermost part of the motif tatted with Dot Picot Strings at the base of yellow rings.

The members of my Indian Tatters Group viz. Aparna, Vrinda, Seema, Vandana enjoyed tatting this motif.

Diane confirmed my written pattern and tried Dot Picots.

Aparna responded quickly

Seema tatted with one extended petal with stunning combination.

Variation by Vrinda, another brilliant tatter in my group.

She restricted the motif to four petals, forming a perfect square.

Muskaan has helped me immensely in finalising the PDF with all her expertise in tatting knowledge and experience. Thank you so much Muskaan!!!

There are two separate pictorials in PDF. One for the steps for the blue cluster on yellow rings and the other for the overall working of the motif.

I learned from Georgia that overlaying effect is same as Muskaan explained in her blog as Ikuta Picots.

Encircled Charm is a variation of this effect.

Many patterns popped up while tatting my tiny motif ‘Encircled Charm’.

These were tatted with normal picots leaving bare thread space between the rings.

Hope you all shall enjoy working with Dot Picots and overlaying too.

The Transformation!!

Georgia Seitz shared patterns of various laces from NeedleArt Magazine, Vol 8#3 published in 1921, in The Tatting Newsletter. I thank Georgia for giving opportunity to bring out creative variations in antique lace patterns.

I have tatted two variations of the Original pattern on BellaOnline.

"Tatted Edges and Insertions for Underwear" Needleart 1921 Edging no 2

Both variations are single shuttle creations with special effect of Dot Picot Strings. Dot Picots give effect of beads when they are tatted uniformly in place of normal picots.

Variation 1-

In the above variation, I have tatted rings with normal picots after every stitch and the chains are replaced by Dot Picot Strings.

Variation 2-

In this variation, normal rings are replaced by Josephine Rings and chains are replaced by dot picot strings. I added dangling Dot Picot Strings with pearl at the end of each scallop.

The Boutonniere from Antique Pattern Library

I was impressed by the frilly look of this button pattern. I replaced all normal picots by dot picots and it showed a totally different look.The Dot Picots look like beads if tatted uniformly.

Variation of The Boutonniere-

Two shuttles were loaded each with two threads simultaneously by CTM method.

I selected matching thread colors of the button for my above outfit.

It was real fun to work with two threads at a time.
